On Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays called up recently acquired outfielder Jordan Luplow from Buffalo AAA and optioned outfielder Nathan Lukes to AAA. Luplow has not played an MLB game in 2023 but was added for his known power against left-handed pitching.
Luplow has a career batting average of .226 with 31 homers and 71 RBIs in 505 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers. He will likely face three in the weekend series against L.A. Angels.
Luplow was acquired on Wednesday through waivers from the Atlanta Braves. Last year, he appeared in 83 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks, hitting .176 with 11 home runs and 28 runs batted in.
The 29-year-old is considered a bit of a Swiss army knife defensively, as he can play all three outfield positions, plus third or first base.
In his six years in the majors, Luplow has spent time with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Diamondbacks. He is a career .213 hitter with 45 home runs and 120 RBIs in 841 at-bats.
After spending seven years in the minor leagues, Lukes made his major league debut as a pinch runner against the St. Louis Cardinals. He scored one run but did not record an official at bat.
The Blue Jays play the first of a three-game weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night before heading to Toronto to play their home opener against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
