After an impressive 18-10 record in Spring Training, Thursday’s season opener at Rogers Centre unfolded in a way Toronto sports fans likely didn’t anticipate, as the Blue Jays fell 12-2 to the Baltimore Orioles.

Blue Jays starter José Berríos struggled early, surrendering a solo shot in the top of the first after hanging a breaking ball over the middle of the plate to All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman. Berríos later allowed six more runs over 81 pitches, including a three-run homer from Burnaby, B.C.’s Tyler O’Neill, before being pulled at the start of the sixth inning. Blue Jays pitching staff gave up six home runs on the afternoon, with two by Rutschman and Cedric Mullins.

Toronto’s only offensive spark came from newly acquired second baseman Andrés Giménez, who hit a two-run homer in the cleanup spot following a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walk in the bottom of the fourth. However, the team continued to show offensive struggles reminiscent of their 2024 season, managing only three hits on the day.

In 2024, the Blue Jays ranked 19th in the league in team batting average (.241), 23rd in runs scored (671), and 26th in home runs (156).

The Toronto Blue Jays will look to bounce back on Friday night as Kevin Gausman takes the mound against the 17-year veteran, Charlie Morton, making his Orioles debut after spending the last four seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
