Like many things happening this time of year, if you told me Drake would spend his 39th birthday at the Rogers Centre watching the Toronto Blue Jays dismantle the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the 2025 World Series—I’d assume it was something out of a Toronto man’s AI-generated fantasy.
The five-time Grammy Award winner pulled up to the biggest Blue Jays game since he was six years old, cheering on his hometown team as they routed the Dodgers 11–4 in front of a sold-out crowd in Game 1.
Drake was spotted in a 300-level luxury box near left field, rocking a distinctive Toronto-themed chain complete with a diamond-studded CN Tower pendant, an old-school Blue Jays logo and a tiny Toronto Raptor. Fans on X quickly dubbed it his “city crown.”
He paired the chain with a vintage Don Bosco Eagles letterman jacket, embroidered with the name R. Ford—a nod to the late Toronto mayor Rob Ford, a diehard sports fan who once coached high school football at Don Bosco in the city’s northwest end during his mayoral campaign.
On the field, the Blue Jays put on a show. The team set a World Series record for the third-most runs scored in a single inning, plating nine in the bottom of the sixth. Alejandro Kirk led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance, while rookie Addison Barger made history with the first pinch-hit grand slam in MLB postseason history.
Off the diamond, one of the series’ most unexpected subplots has been the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar rivalry— aka. Toronto vs. L.A., personified. It’ll be interesting to see how Lamar responds when the series shifts back to Los Angeles for Games 3 through 5 next week.
Before that, the Jays will look to extend their lead at home in Game 2, with Kevin Gausman set to face Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw a complete game in his previous start.
